Mount Merapi Below:
Mount Merapi is an active volcano in Java, and in Indonesia they call it Gunung Merapi. It is located near central java and Yogyakarta. It is the most active volcano and erupts regularly, and some of the eruptions are harmful. Smoke comes out of the volcano at least 300 times a year. On November 22, 1994, the hot gas from the volcano killed around 27 people, in the town of Muntilan, which is west of the volcano. Another eruption occurred a little bit before the Yogyakarta earthquake in 2006. Since all of these eruptions, it is in the Decade Volcanos.
The name Merapi is translated as the Mountain of Fire, and the etymology is from the Javanese words Meru which translates “mountain”, and “api”, which translates as fire. It used to be called Mount Jamurdipo, but in honor of the spirits, the name was later changed to Mount Merapi. Mount Merapi is known to have many spirits. It is heard that there is a complete spirit kingdom inside of the volcano with roads, princes and princesses, servants, thrones and the whole package. It is rumored that the population of the kingdom is filled with spirits that died as righteous people. The spirits sometimes come into the people who live around the volcano’s dreams as warnings or given prophecies.
The Indonesian government was becoming worried about the residents near the volcano ever since the 2006 eruption. Now the volcano is on watch and if it is about to erupt, they warn the villagers to move to a safer area. Mount Merapi is a very interesting place, and if you stop by in Java, you should most definitely visit it.
